Nope, I don’t even know what to call the genre. And he was horrified. I stroked it gently, with my thumb.
However, I felt like the teacher was the prey and the teenager girl was the predator in this book. Okay, first of all, I’m still astounded by the fact that I grew to know the protagonist so intimately, learned how she thinks, learned that she’s a raging freaking psychopath who has to fake all her emotions and gets off cooote manipulating and seducing her unfortunate teacher-lover who ends up being almost as fucked up as she is.
The characters never face real challenges, not even in the graphic, hard-to-swallow climactic scene that is followed by a weird albeit atypical ending. I haven’t read a large number of these kinds of books yet, but based on the few I have I suspect this is one of the better examples.
Never did she know her Darling would somehow become her escape from all that’s gone wrong.

The things she goaded him in to, that she brought out of him, were often hard to read, not because of what they were but she was such a detached participant most of the time. But when the perpetrator is a sixteen-year-old schoolgirl, is onnocents culpable?

I think she focused more on the materialized emotions instead of what truly her characters are feeling. Her novel Innocents was originally published in Australia, in Coote’s debut written when she was 19 details a twisted love affair between a teenage student and teacher from the nymphet’s point of view. The book felt like it was trying too hard to be emotion-driven and strerile at the same time, but it just came off as a whole lot of innocdnts, repetitive drama that I didn’t particularly warm to.
However, it was written by a 19 year old.

This book was extremely different I skimmed it, reading paragraphs here and there that interested me, and all I got out of it was sex, sex and masturbating and sex and one hell of a twisted relationship that I just didn’t care for.
Dirty sketchbooks aren’t enough to convince me, I’m afraid.
